A Finder’s Guide to the films of David Lynch

So you want to listen along to Kickers of Elves on Lynch but haven’t watched the movies yet? We got you covered.

Where does one find all these films anyway? Turns out it’s not an easy answer. The streaming rights seem to be spread all over the place, if there are any in place at all. We talk about this some in the podcast episodes-
I’m not listening to the episode because I haven’t seen the movie yet, asshole!
Oh right. Of course. I’ll detail below where we watched each film and maybe how you could do the same. Some of these are hard to find. The number one option I’d put here is CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY. Blockbuster and the neighborhood video store are dead, but turns out libraries have a lot of that shit available for free. And interlibrary loans are a thing so you might stand good odds of finding things there if you live in the right place. And this is the only way to do it for free… unless you’re a bad sinful person and willing to go to the high seas [Some of you know what I mean. Those that don’t… don’t worry about it.]

Anyways, here’s how we watched the films of David Lynch for the podcast:

David Lynch: The Art Life – [Technically not a film by David Lynch, but it informed a lot of how we viewed the rest of the films, especially Eraserhead, which is what a lot of the film is about.]
We watched this one on the Criterion Channel app. (https://www.criterionchannel.com/david-lynch-the-art-life)

Eraserhead – We also watched this one on the Criterion Channel

The Elephant Man – Hey, a pattern! We also watched this one on Criterion- OH Damn. It doesn’t look like it’s there anymore.  Streaming now on Paramount +.
So… ok. If you want to catch up on Star Trek Resignation knock yourself out I guess

Dune – We watched this one on Showtime I believe. But hey, turns out things are tricky
Currently available on HBO MAX

Blue Velvet – This one is available on Showtime

Wild at Heart – This is where it gets really tricky. There is no streaming option for this film. Which is a shame because we really like it. You can’t even buy a digital copy on amazon or apple even. So unless your library has it, your best bet is to buy a copy on ebay or wherever you can find it. Even then, the dvd transfer isn’t all that great. And the bluray is just a transfer of the dvd so… you deal with what you get. If a high definition picture doesn’t matter David Lynch … More on that later

Lost Highway – This one isn’t streaming anywhere either, but at least you can buy or rent it on Apple or Amazon or wherever. Again, try the library if that’s an option for you.

The Straight Story – Hey, this one’s easy if you have kids or are a kid or are watching the Marvel shows. It’s available on Disney +

Mulholland Drive – This one isn’t too hard either. It’s available on HBO MAX

Inland Empire – What a pain in the ass! No, not the film. I’m just talking about finding it. This one can’t be found on any of the streaming sites either. Ok, that’s not exactly true. There is a version on youtube in its entirety, but it’s impossible to watch. Feel free to try if you want. A couple of us tried to screen it that way, but for a film that’s hard enough to watch in its original SD version, the transfer and upload to youtube made it even worse. Your best bet again is to try your local library or else buy a dvd or blu ray for a film that could probably be transfered to a CD without much difference in the picture.

So that’s that! If you listen to the pod or watch these movies feel free to tell us about it. Maybe on the discord if you join the patreon
